The Boss is Back
I haven’t bought Bruce Springsteen’s new album yet. I probably will soon – I liked “Radio Nowhere” when I heard it a few weeks ago. I just don’t feel any compelling reason to download everything right away.
That said, I’m glad it sounds like the real Bruce Springsteen has returned. I missed him.
I have hardly listened to anything he did over the past 10-15 years. Thanks to my older siblings, I grew up with Bruce. I knew about “Born to Run” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town” as long as I can remember.
I went to see Bruce in concert once, during the “Born in the U.S.A.” tour. I turned 16 that summer. I was 12 and not old enough to go when “The River” came out. I had been waiting ever since then to go see Bruce. I had heard epic stories of three-hour concerts, the introduction of the band during “Rosalita,” the never-ending encores.
Bruce didn’t disappoint. I remember so much from that show, but one thing stands out in my mind. After Bruce counted to four to start the final verse of “Born to Run,” the house lights at the old Cap Centre outside D.C. burst on and you could see everyone jumping up and down in the bright light as Bruce fittingly sang, “but there’s no place left to hide.”
As Bruce made acoustic albums that left me cold and strayed from the E Street Band magic, I held onto that memory hoping that the real Bruce would come back one day. I hope that day has come.
