My wife and I take a lot of pride in our TV viewing habits. We have a carefully orchestrated schedule which keeps us entertained without causing a lot of fuss.

Luckily, the shows we watch very rarely overlap. We have a Tivo, but it is a single-tuner machine so we have to be careful when we want to time-shift. I have floated the idea of adding a DVR to our bedroom TV, but we really don’t need it. I have a DVR on the TV in the Man Cave so I can record all kinds of stuff down there in a pinch.

Normally, it’s OK to record something and watch at our leisure, but if two things we like are on at the same time, we have to watch one live upstairs while the other records.

This only happens once a week, from 9 to 10 on Thursdays. We like to watch the NBC comedies (The Office and 30 Rock) as well as Grey’s Anatomy. Currently, we watch the comedies live and save Grey’s for one night over the weekend.

I found out this week at one of my favorite websites, TV by the Numbers, that we are not alone. In fact, Grey’s has the largest number of DVR viewers for any show on TV today. More than 25 percent of the people who watch the show do so on their own time. 90210 has a greater percentage of viewers who choose the recording instead of the live broadcast.
