Do you know how some years, film experts talk about the lack of good candidates for The Oscars? Well, it’s that kind of year for The Brians, now celebrating their fourth year. Actually, the quality of the films eligible remains very high. The number of films, not so much.

In fact, I have had to expand the rules beyond the original concept, which was movies I saw in the theatre. This year, all movies released in 2005 that I saw in any form were eligible.

I only saw three movies released in 2005, however. Pretty sad, huh? “The Wedding Crashers” (we ordered that on the TV while on vacation), “Hitch” (cable) and “40-Year-Old Virgin” (we actually saw that in the theatre) will battle for honors.

Best Supporting Actress: None. I really couldn’t think of anyone who fit this bill.

Best Supporting Actor: Paul Rudd from “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” His whiny emo character provided a great foil for Steve Carrell’s lead. He kind of made you want to say, “if that guy can get a girl, anyone can!” Plus, the “why you are so gay” scene was one of my favorite of the year.

Best Actress: Isla Fisher, “Wedding Crashers.” She played the perfect psycho that wouldn’t let Vince Vaughn’s character get away. A great compliment to the crazy male leads.

Best Actor: Vince Vaughn, “Wedding Crashers.” For all the talk about Will Farrell (even from me), Vaughn has been on fire the past few years. Jeremy Grey could go down as one of the best comedy characters ever.

Best movie: “Wedding Crashers.” This one was hard because “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” was great. But the lowbrow nature of Crashers just sucked me in.

And the best part of the night, the minor awards:

Best line: Steve Carrell in Virgin when he was having his chest waxed. He really did have to go through that process, which makes, “Ooooooh, Kelly Clarkson” even funnier than intended. For him to pull that off while in extreme pain just shows how genius the entire scene was.

Best cameo: Will Ferrell in Crashers as legendary wedding crasher Chazz Reinhold. His constant calls to his mother for meatloaf made absolutely no sense, but kept the movie from getting too serious. And Will has to get an award every year. It’s in the bylaws.

Best movie moment: I feel like I have to give “Hitch” something. It’s pretty hard going up against the other heavyweights eligible this year. I liked the movie and all, but the best moment came at the end when Maria and I were watching the credits. The background was the wedding reception of Kevin James’ character and his love interest. All of a sudden, Maria points to the screen.

“I know that place!”

Sure as anything, she goes over to the bookshelf and pulls off one of her many picture books of historic houses. There’s the mansion from the movie right there on the cover.

You learn something new every day. That’s what the Brians are all about.
