Monday Joy: Bake Off

When I started streaming, I felt like I had been enveloped in a huge hug. The Great British baking show had returned.

The wait seemed interminable even though it wasn’t any longer than usual. But as I have gotten into the show since the pandemic began, my interest in the new season starting as soon as possible has grown exponentially.

I originally did not think I would be able to watch this first episode on the day it came out. I had plans Friday night and did not expect to be home in time to sit in front of the TV for another hour. However, my poker game ended earlier than I expected so I poured a pint to feel the warmth of the tent instead of a cup of coffee the next morning as I expected.

One of the things I love about the show is the traditions. It really doesn’t get stale for me even though it doesn’t change much. Sure, some of the contestants fit into some classic tropes. However, that doesn’t bother me at all. I love Cake Week to see what they throw at the bakers and how they handle it. I love seeing who will try to freelance and who will stick to the recipe even if it has no extra flavor. I love trying to figure out through the editing who is in trouble for the first elimination and who will be a season-long favorite.

I guessed correctly on the first one – no spoilers here; you have to go watch yourself – and have an inkling on who fits into that second category. But mainly I just enjoyed the coming and the cheekiness as a bunch of people did something I could never do even if I focused as hard as I could.
