Enchanted by Enchanted

If I wanted to write a snarky review of Enchanted, I could say that I liked it better the first time when they called it Splash and included John Candy quoting Swedish porn (check the 8:30 mark of this clip) in order to rescue the damsel in distress.

But I won’t do that because I just liked the movie too much. I went, like I normally do to movies of this ilk, with my 7-year-old daughter. She really liked the commercials, especially the part when the prince jumps off an overpass to begin his romantic song only to be run over by a pack of New York cyclists.

I hoped that the trailer didn’t give away every good gag and came away very pleased. The live-action chipmunk entertained Bridget while I marveled at the acting, especially Amy Adams. I think she won herself a Brian with this performance.

Playing the cartoon princess thrust into real-life New York, she managed to project half Disney princess and half escaped mental patient. You could totally see why Patrick Dempsey‘s character would want to just get her out of his life, but you could also see why his young daughter would be fascinated by such a person.

And that’s the strength of Enchanted. They really did a great job of showing us the need to embrace what we deal with in real life with what we wish our lives could be. It’s OK to have fantasy and imagination, no matter how old you are.
