Book Review: Froth
I generally don’t like to look too much into the details about my food and drink. I know things aren’t always pretty or simple so I just accept those kinds of things and enjoy what I enjoy.
But when I saw the book Froth: The Science of Beer I knew I had to suspend that rule of not asking questions. So I settled down to enjoy Mark Denny‘s funny and fizzy book about one of our greatest beverages.
I needed a while to read this book even though the text only checks in at 167 pages. The subtitle does not lie. There is a lot of science in this book. I hated science, but Denny presents things in a way that you can take in what you can handle and move on.
The author also includes plenty of humor in the book, which he claims will clear up any questions about the fizzics of beer. With the equations and charts, I needed a few good laughs.
He really covers everything from homebrewing to why the big breweries do things the way they do to why we should all do our best to sample and research the many different kinds of beer out there. If you appreciate quality and adventurous beer, this is the book for you.
The best thing is – he encourages you to reward yourself with a cold brew when you finish the chapters with the most science. That’s the kind of homework I can put up with.
