Monday Joy: Hacks, Season 1

Starting a new thing here – a short Monday post each week about something I am currently enjoying.

This is inspired by a favorite podcast of mine, NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour. They do a segment once a week called “What’s Making Us Happy,” where each panelist shares something making them happy.

I binged a bunch of PCHH episodes recently because I tend to get behind and because my podcast player is being weird and only letting me set my playlist by category. So I just strapped in and remembered how fun that segment could be each week.

So here’s my Monday joy. Hopefully I will continue this.

We subscribed to HBO Max a while back, mainly because my daughter had something specific she wanted to watch. Then I started exploring and have kept the subscription going.

My Monday Joy this week is Season 1 of the comedy-drama Hacks. This should be no surprise for people who know how much I love comedy or those who know the accolades already bestowed on this show. But I have to add my two cents.

First off, Jean Smart is a freaking American treasure. Her performance as Deborah perfectly ticks every box for me. I can see this person existing precisely as she is portrayed. I am excited to see where the second season takes her. (If you love this show and NEED me to watch Season 2 RIGHT NOW, I promise I will get to it soon.)

Secondly, Hannah Einbinder made sure to bring comedy to a show about a comedian. What a revelation. I loved Ava’s journey and,m again, can’t wait to see if she wriggles out of (another) mess she made at the end of Season 1.

I could continue to tick things off in numerical order, but that would be tedious. Suffice to say I love everything about the show. It all makes sense because the show is chock full of improv and Mike Schur DNA.

So this Monday, I get great joy from Season 1 of Hacks and hope you will check it out if you haven’t.
